New Club Cycling Kit

We now have the final designs for our new club cycling outfit.  We all think it looks fantastic and very smart.  The garments will be all made at HOT designs, which is an Australian company.  Thanks to generous sponsorship from Western Plains Automotive and SV Partners, we are able to offer the full kit for a very cheap price of $220.00.  The short sleeve jersey will cost members $62, the Bib Knicks $75, and the long sleeve winter jersey will be $84.  We also have a limited supply of arm warmers in club colours at $20 a pair.

Membership updates

New memberships for 2012 are now available for riders who are not current members of the club. Full licences cost $80, and details can be found on the Membership page.  If you have not renewed your membership before the end of December 2011, you will not be permitted to participate in racing activities.  Our club membership now stands at 54 fully licensed riders as well as our invaluable social members. It would be fantastic to top this number in 2012.

So far this year we have 8 new members who are new to the sport.  This is great considering we have had a few members from last year that have left town and not re-joined the club.  Please try to support and encourage the new members.

Members who have new bikes this season include Jeremy Fewtrell, David Gerrish, Phil Harrex, Luke Beange, Sam Peacock, John O'Brien, David Clark, Liz Meredith and Ray Heinzel .  Carbon fibre is the new material and everyone is getting in amongst it.

Congratulations

The club would like to extend heartfelt congratulations  to Evan Elliott and Darrell Wheeler, who both took part in the cycling events at the Australian National Championships in Ballarat in October 2011.  Both members had great success, won a swag of medals, and gained the grand championship in their respective age groups.

Evan then went on to Adelaide to take part in the Austarlian Masters games.  He cleaned up again winning medals for both road and tack events.  Keith and Dana Harris also competed at Adelaide in both road and track events. winning a swag of medals between them.  Congratulations to all those competitors who took part.

National Titles 2011were held in Adelaide on 12th  to 15th May.

Orana Veterans Cycling Club had only two representatives at Adelaide for the National Championships.  Evan Elliott from Dubbo, and Hugh Gray from Sydney took part in all road and criterium events, with great success.  Evan won gold in the time trial and road race, and was just pipped on the line at the criterium and had to settle for fourth.  However he scored a gold medal in the pursuit event on the track on Thursday 12th.  Hugh Gray took silver in his road race and bronze at the criterium.

Well done to those two members.

All the race results can be found on the SA website Click here    to see the results.

National Titles 2010 Canberra

Orana Vets cycle club was well represented at the National Titles last year with 13 riders entered in various events.  Entrants were Evan Elliott, Kathy Furney, Darrell Wheeler, Ray Wheeler, Phil Harrex, Maurie Ashford, Amber Carter, Raphael Chapman, Jeff Sargent, Graham Chapman, Max Newton, Catriona Jennings and David Menzies.  Narromine Vets Club was also represented by Keith and Dana Harris.

Unfortunately Phil Harrex was injured in a race one week prior to the Titles and was unable to take part.  Bad news for Maurie Ashford also, who was injured in the last lap of his criterium race, when his bike went out from under him.

However the other participants took part and did their club proud.  Not everyone received medals, but the total tally was 3 gold, four silver and 6 bronze.  Darrell Wheeler was awarded gold in the time trial as well as the  criterium, and got the silver in the road race in a very close finish.  Evan Elliott won gold for the time trial, bronze in the Criterium and silver in the road race.  Ray Wheeler took home silver medals in the criterium and road race.  Kathy Furney got bronze for the time trial and road race.  Amber Carter got Silver in the criterium and bronze for the road race.  Max Newton was awarded a bronze medal in his road race, while Dana Harris got a bronze in the road race.

Darrell Wheeler also received 3rd prize for the Russell Mockridge Age Adjusted Time Trial, as well as another prize for the best overall performance in his age division.  Evan Elliott was another recipient of the best overall performer in his age division.

All the results are on the ACT Vets website at www.actvets.cc

Congratulations to all who took part.

This year the National Titles will be held in Adelaide on 12th  to 15th May.  Lets see if we can get another good crowd down there.

Winter Races 2011

The winter race season started on Saturday 2nd April 2011.  The pointscore will be in operation again this year, with 1st place getting 11 points, 2nd place 10 points, 3rd place 9 points and so on.  Everyone else who finishes the race  receives one point  We don't have any Bar-B-Qs during the season, but lots of fantastic prizes (OK, tubes, pizzas, coffee vouchers etc) are up for grabs in each race.  We will be also having a special women's only prize and award at the end of this years winter season.  More news on this as the season progresses.

Don't forget that race registration fees during the winter months are $5.00.

Last year's  winter pointscore finished on 25th September, and the 1st place getter in the pointscore was Club president Evan Elliott.  Second place went to David Clark, 3rd was Phil Harrex, 4th was Grahame Chapman, and 5th went to Jeff Sargent.  The encouragement award went to Raphael Chapman, who was the person who did the most races out of the top five places.  We had four extra race days on the Burraway Road course during October.  These races were treated as training races, and did not attract points in the pointscore.  We still give out pizza and coffee vouchers for the first three placings.

Summer Race Season 2011/2012

The 2011/2012 race season will kick off on Thursday afternoon 3rd November at 6.00pm.  The races all started adjacent to the Lazy River Winery on the Old Dubbo Rd, and were either be 14k or 19k in distance.  The races were be an out and back type of race.

Riders must follow all road rules at all times, and obey any marshals instructions.  If a marshal displays a white flag you can proceed, but must stop if a red flag is displayed.

All riders must hold a current AVCC licence, unless you are a rider new to the sport.  In that case you are allowed one race without a licence, to "test the waters" and decide if you wish to take up the sport.  Please contact the club Secretary beforehand if you intend to take up the offer of a "trial ride".

All participants are requested to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the race start time for registration purposes.  We had a FREE Bar-B-Q on the first Thursday of each month after the race at Wahroonga Park in South Dubbo.  There wasn't a pointscore during the summer season, but prizes were awarded to the first three placings each week.  Race registration fees will be still only $2.00.

Updates to website

There is  a National Titles page on this site. If you are looking for results from titles, have a bo peep! Also, you will see that all of our sponsors are mentioned.

Fashion Hints

Apparently cable ties are being worn extra long this year. Not sure if the magpies have taken the hint.

Race Etiquette

A reminder to all riders on a number of race etiquette points.  Firstly, if you have not worked at the front of a bunch in a handicap race, it is not considered sporting that you contest the sprint. Consider the riders who have worked hard all race to get the bunch into a winning position - it isn't fair that they do the hard work and you reap the rewards. If you want to sprint, you should spend your time at the front of the bunch. If you don't have the strength to do every turn, at least do a few.

Secondly, DO NOT move from the rear of the bunch to the front against the flow of the bunch. If you want to work a turn at the front, then you need to move up through the bunch - don't come up on the outside. It's dangerous on the narrow roads we race on and breaks up the rhythm of the bunch.
